He didn't/couldn't/wasn't able to see/realize/understand the danger/risk/peril he was in. As he reached/got to/climbed up to the top, the branch/limb/twig broke/snapped/fell. Sam plummeted/fell/crashed to the ground with a loud/sharp/painful thud/sound/crash.

His New Friend

Sam was feeling a little sad. He wished to have a new pal to play with. One day, while he was playing in the woods, he saw something unusual. It was a little creature with bright scales. Sam carefully walked over to the creature and spoke, "Hello! What's your title?" The creature grinned and told Sam, "You can call me Lily!" And so, Sam made a new friend. They spent the rest of the day playing together.

Sam was so happy to have found a new friend. He knew that he and Lily would be great pals forever.
